A police chief who was convicted of searching the home of Sarah Jessica Parker’s surrogate for souvenirs to sell has been jailed for over two years.

Cop Barry Carpenter was sentenced for breaking into the home of Michelle Ross, who gave birth in June to twin girls for the Sex And The City star and her actor husband Matthew Broderick.

Carpenter, who was the police chief in Martins Ferry, Ohio, where Ross lives, resigned from his post two weeks ago, after being found guilty of receiving stolen property, theft in office and tampering with evidence.

Ross was not at home at the time of the incident and told a court that she discovered items had been moved when she returned from hospital, including a plaster-cast of her belly, missing ultrasound pictures and various documents relating to the surrogacy.

Carpenter was caught on tape by investigators admitting that he entered the house after he spotted a basement door had been left ajar and “secured” it.

But two paparazzi told the jury that Carpenter had approached them looking to sell the souvenirs.

Carpenter, who was acquitted of burglary, had faced a maximum six-year sentence.

His lawyer confirmed that he plans to appeal the sentence.

Carpenter’s alleged accomplice, Bridgeport Police Chief Chad Dojack, is to stand trial on similar charges in January.
