Drew Barrymore has opened up about her split from Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti and growing up in the public eye in a heartfelt interview.
The 34-year-old former child star was reportedly close to tears talking about both things while promoting her new movie Grey Gardens.
The HBO film is the true-life story of two eccentric relatives of the late Jacqueline Kennedy – a mother and daughter both called Edith Bouvier Beale.
In an interview with US Elle, Barrymore explains why she feels emotionally connected to her character.
“I realised I probably felt like Little Edie did,” she says.
“I felt she was really in pain inside. And I was starting to feel less optimistic in my life and it was exciting for me to have something to put it into.
“I was so mad at some of the things that have happened in my life and all I ever wanted to say was: ‘No, no, no I am fabulous, I am happy, I can take care of myself. Don’t worry about me. I am totally professional’.
“But you know, maybe everything is not f***ing OK all the time.
Then, speaking about her break up with Moretti, which happened around the time she started filming Grey Gardens, the actress says: “It’s hard to be with someone for five years and say: ‘This isn’t going to work’.
“But it was a time in my life where I finally just said: ‘I can’t live for anyone else anymore. I have to be on my own’.”
The 34-year-old actress has been making movies since she was a little girl, lighting up the screen at the age of seven in Steven Spielberg’s ET.
